Phishing & Email Scams

How many emails you respond to each day without much thought. The emails from your friends? Requests from your manager? Special offers from your favourite brands? We regularly act on email without questioning it.

Now think what would happen if a scammer sent you an email that - by sheer luck - looked like something you might be expecting. No matter how much security software we may have on our computer, users (ie us!) are always the last line of defence for stopping these scams.

Spotting phishing emails

Phishing emails can be dangerous if we follow any web links or open attachments. Fortunately most of these emails have tell-tale signs that, once we know what to look for, can dramatically increase our chances of spotting them.

Fraud and scam emails

Criminals often use email to con people with ever more clever types of fraud. Whether it's the traditional '419 Nigeria scam', dating fraud, penny stocks, or posing as your boss asking to transfer money ('CEO Fraud'), the scams that fraudsters dream up are seemingly neverending.

How to reduce spam

Spam is all that unwanted junk mail we get, whether from household name companies or less reputable places. The emails themselves aren't neccessarily dangerous (although what's being sold might be) but they can still be incredibly annoying.
